In many respects London, during the Victorian era, or the long period of time in which Queen Victoria reigned, was one of the most thrilling places in all of history. The Industrial Revolution, and all the advances it brought, created mind-boggling new technology and opportunities for growth and expansion and success. It was almost as if there was a second English Renaissance occurring. But in other ways it was dirty, depressing and dangerous. Charles Dickens is such an important author because he captured all of this in his writing. The paradox of the era was chronicled in his articles, stories and novels. Over the next couple of days, you'll be taking a "web-quest" walk through London, paralleling the steps that I made a few summers ago, in order to learn about Charles Dickens and the London in which he lived.
